Surgeon General Recommends
Exercise Most Days of the Week
The Office of the Surgeon General, in a 1996
report, recommended strength training at least twice a week and cardio
exercise most days of the week. According to this report, regular
physical activity reduces the risk of developing or dying from heart
disease, noninsulin-dependent diabetes, hypertension, and colon cancer;
reduces symptoms of anxiety and depression; helps develop and maintain
healthy bones, muscles and joints; and helps control weight. Physical
activity also helps older adults maintain the ability to live
independently and helps prevent falling and fractures.
Specifically, the SG recommended strength training twice a week and a
half-hour of moderate intensity cardio activity every day. Years of
subsequent research have confirmed these findings, including the fact
that, while moderate activity has considerable health benefits, the
amount of health benefit is directly related to the amount of physical
activity.
VS&F has many ways to meet your needs for physical activity. Review
