Link Found Between Excess Weight and Cancer

A condition that occurs in the bodies of many inactive, overweight individuals may actually encourage the cancer process, according to researchers at the American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR). Past studies have shown that overweight, inactive individuals have higher risk for many cancers, but a clear biological answer for why this is so has been more elusive. Now, research is showing that being overweight and inactive can cause the body to release high levels of insulin and other hormones know as "growth factors." These growth factors can cause the rapid cell growth that can lead to cancer. The AICR recommends regular physical exercise and weight loss to restore insulin and other growth factors to normal levels.

Six Months of Exercise Shown to Reverse Aging

In one of the longest longitudinal group studies on the effects of exercise, scientists found that six months of moderate exercise reversed 100 percent of subjects loss of cardiovascular capacity, retuning the group to their baselines of 30 years earlier. this pivotal study also showed that 20 days of bed rest had a more profound profound impact on physical fitness than 30 years of aging. The messages are clear: Even an older person who has failed to maintain fitness over time will benefit from an exercise program, and can combat the effects of aging. Moreover, if you stop exercising you will lose what you have gained quickly. the researchers have concluded that exercise should be a life-long habit, like brushing your teeth - to be sustained throughout your life.

VS&F Fields Twelve USTA Teams

USTA team tennis allows players at every level to join a team and play matches against players of similar abilities from other areas. Teams have ten to fifteen members who practice together and play six to twelve matches against other teams. VS&F runs many less formal playing groups, where players are able to play at a convenient, regularly scheduled time, with compatible playing partners.

Two Types of Strength Training Classes help all ages and fitness levels

Our Strength Training class is a perfect place for beginners and older adults. Hand weights and floor exercises help participants gain strength, tone and flexibility in a moderately paced, supportive environment. Body Pump is a higher intensity strength training class with specially accredited instructors. Body Pump uses light barbells and lots of repetitions in a fast paced, high-energy environment. Both classes occur many times throughout the week and are free for club members.

Taking a Class for the First Time?
Here's What to Do.

First of all, we LOVE to have beginners! On your first day, arrive a few minutes early and let your instructor know it's your first time. Follow your instructor's guidance about adaptations that may be appropriate for you in your first few sessions and don't worry about keeping up with the veterans. Class participants are not in a contest. They are working together to reach personal goals. Have fun and don't worry about doing everything just right. We know what it's like to be a beginner.

Variety Can Help You Reach Your Fitness Goals

Varying you exercise routine is helpful in two ways: it keeps you from getting bored or stale; and it overcomes training plateaus so your fitness can grow and grow. Trying different group activities can be a great way to change your fitness routine and get you to a new level. Variation is important of mind AND body.

The Body-Mind Program:
For Inner and Outer Strength

If you are seeking a fit and flexible body, a time to de-stress, and increased vitality, then one of our Body-Mind classes might be perfect for you. Call or stop at our front desk to learn more about these healing arts.

The value of exercise for an abundance of health issues has been overwhelmingly documented by Western Science... so much so that the Office of the U.S. Surgeon General compares lack of exercise to smoking a pack of cigarettes a day... and recommends a half-hour or more of moderate exercise on most days of the week.

As research comes in, we are seeing evidence for many specific and general benefits of Body-Mind approaches, much as we have seen with Western approaches to exercise. This Western research on Eastern methods is in its infancy but we expect to learn what Eastern cultures have known for thousands of years... these approaches can make a powerful difference in our lives.

What If You Don't Like Group Activity?

While we offer many types of group activity, the majority of our members still prefer to exercise on their own. If that is what you want, we'll teach you how to get the most from our equipment and how to get started with our personal program. We want you to gain health and fitness in the ways that are most comfortable for you.
